The Dearborn Brand Hockey Club Welcomes
Kelly Nester to it's coaching staff
Head Coach '94 Bantam AAA team '00 Mite AA team About Kelly Nester: Kelly is a former Michigan standout player that played triple “A” hockey in the Detroit area. Little Caesars, Compuware and the Michigan Nationals organizations were stops along the way just to name a few.He was schooledand coached by the world famous Real Turcotte of the renowned Turcotte Stick handling School. After his final Midget AAA season, he was heavily recruited by U.S. colleges, Harvard, U of M, Northern Michigan and Miami of Ohio just to name a handful. However, after playing for the United States Midget National team and leading the way in scoring was also a top prospect for the three Major Junior A leagues. He was drafted by the prestigious Hull Olympiques organization owned by Wayne Gretzky at the time and coached by NHL Jack Adams trophy winner, Pat Burns. Notching high marks and statistics and barely 17 years old he would then be coached by another current NHL great Vancouvers, Alain Vigneault. Vigneault, a Jack Adams finalist himself was an excellent mentor and fan of Nester’s high level of skill. Unfortunately, in his third year with Hull under Vigneault again, Nester was ailed a good portion of the season with crippling back spasms. This forced Nester too miss the World Junior championships that year as he was an early summer selection with the likes of Jeremy Roenick, John Leclair, Mathieu Schneider, and many more NHL greats of our time. Nester had also played the year before for the U.S. Under 17 Team in Lake Placid New York in a three game series with Russia. After the back spasms were controlled to a level where Nester could play again, he returned to Hull of the QMJHL, (Quebec Major Junior Hockey League), to lead the league in playoff scoring until Hull’s elimination. Following this season Nester received free agent tryout offers from multiple NHL teams as he went undrafted for three seasons. He chose the Los Angeles Kings organization and quickly made his impression at the training camp. Nester spent a month and a half with Kings organization playing in three exhibition games where he notched points in every match. However, the kings elected to send Nester back to the Hull Olympiques unsigned. In 1989 Nester decided that with a still ailing back and no NHL contract he would retire at the young age of 20. Kelly Nester continues to coach young players in the Detroit area and run his hockey schools, Kelly Nester’s Hockey Dynamics, which is a high level hockey school focusing on individual skills. 2007-2008 Southgate Mite B (head coach) Summer 2006-2007 Ran Kelly Nester’s Hockey Dynamics Skills Camp through out summer Mite thru Bantam level 2006-2007 Southgate Mini-mites (assistant coach)
